Research suggests that dairy foods, and especially cheese, may play a key role in protecting perfect smiles. Although studies show that drinking milk does not promote cavities, cheese may be even more beneficial as it has been shown to protect against cavities. Researchers believe it’s the nutrients found in milk and cheese (such as protein, calcium, and phosphorus) that contribute to this protective effect.

Snacks to Smile About
Snacks are a great idea for kids since they’re an easy way to sneak in nutrients that may otherwise be missing at meals. Moms and dads need to ensure, however, that between-meal-munchies are not only good for the body, but also safe for smiles:

  • Make snacks from foods of more than one food group.
  • Allow no more than one ingredient from the fats, oils and sweets group.
  • Include high-fiber foods such as whole-grains, fruits, vegetables, dry beans, nuts and seeds.
  • Make it a low-fat or reduced-fat snack.
  • Let your child help prepare the snack.

Most importantly, set aside time to enjoy a snack together.
